Keeping up with CEUs
What are CEUs
CEUs are a measure used in continuing education programs to quantify the time spent in educational activities.
Importance of CEUs
CEUs, or Continuing Education Units, are essential for professionals in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to maintain and stay updated on best practices and research in the field.
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) requires BCBAs to complete 32 CEUs every two years as part of their recertification process.
How to earn CEUs
Workshops and conferences: Attending professional development events that focus on ABA practices and research
Online courses: Participating in online learning modules that cover relevant topics in behavior analysis.
Reading Literature: Engaging with scholarly articles and books related to ABA practices
RBT and CEUs
Starting January 1, 2026, Major changes will be affecting the direction Registered Behavior Technicians apply and renew their certifications. The BCAB will implement the following changes:
New Model for RBTs
Recertification Cycle: Instead of completing an annual renewal, RBTs will renew their certification every 2 years.
Competency Assessment: The annual competency assessment will be removed. The initial competency assessment will stay intake but will no longer have to be renewed every year.
Continuing Education: RBTs will need to complete 12 hours of continuing Education (CEUs) during every 2-year cycle.
Fees: Initial application fee will increase from $50 to $65. Renewal fee will increase from $35 every year to $50 every 2 years.
Being an RBT
What is an RBT?
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a certified professional who implements behavior analytic interventions under the supervision of a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to support individuals with behavioral challenges.
Why are RBTs important?
You will be crucial to families needing ABA services because we provide direct, consistent care and support, helping to address specific behavioral challenges and facilitate progress in their child's development. We provide relief to families who are struggling with challenging behaviors with their loved ones through evidence-based strategies and interventions.
Values of an RBT
An effective RBT will demonstrate patience, empathy, consistency, strong communication skills, problem-solving ability, and professionalism to support individuals and their families effectively while maintaining ethical standards.
Goals of an RBT
Implementing Behavior Interventions: Delivering evidence-based strategies to address specific behavioral goals and objectives outlined in the treatment plan.
Monitoring Progress: Collecting accurate data on the individual’s behavior and progress to inform adjustments to the treatment plan.
Promoting Skill Development: Supporting the individual in acquiring new skills, such as communication, social interactions, and daily living tasks.
Encouraging Positive Behavior: Reinforcing desirable behaviors and reducing problematic behaviors through consistent and effective application of behavioral principles.
Ensuring Safety and Well-being: Maintaining a safe and supportive environment, ensuring the individual's well-being throughout the session.
